Beth Sawi, President
Charles Schwab & Co, Inc.
Beth was elected to the board in July 2003. For 20 years, she worked for Charles Schwab & Co., as Chief Administrative Officer and Executive VP of Marketing, among other positions. She is the author of Coming Up for Air: How to Live a Balanced Life in a Workaholic World. Beth has an MBA from Stanford and a BA from Tufts University.
John Verber, Vice President
Burnham Brown
John is the Managing Partner at Burnham Brown, a 50 attorney law firm in Oakland. Prior to becoming an attorney, he worked in various aspects of the health care industry, including as an administrator with The Methodist Hospital Health Care System in Houston, Texas. He earned a Masters of Public Health from the University of Texas and his JD from University of San Francisco.
Sister Marilyn Medau, Secretary
St. Mary’s Community Center
A member of Sisters of the Presentation, Sister Marilyn is Director of the Food for All Ages program at St. Mary’s Center in Oakland, which serves pre-schoolers and homeless seniors. She was elected to the Food Bank Board of Directors in 1999. Her past service in the ministry includes Pastoral Associate at St. Columbia and St. Anthony Parishes, and staff member of the Building Ministerial Community and Social Justice Resource Center, all in Oakland.

Rev. Robert (Bob) Allen
Shiloh Christian Fellowship
Bob, an Oakland native, is Vice President, Board of Directors for Shiloh Christian Fellowship & International Ministries and has been associated with the Food Bank since 1985. Bob states, “Without the resources and the outstanding cooperation of the staff and helpers at all levels at the Food Bank, we at Mercy Ministries could not serve the number of families that we do.”
Tarang Amin
The Clorox Comapny
Mr. Amin is Vice President of Clorox Global Franchise where he is responsible for leading the growth and global expansion of the $1.5 Billion Clorox franchise. In addition, he has responsibility for Laundry, Home Care and Away from Home marketing and Health & Wellness growth platform. Prior to joining Clorox, Amin worked for 12 years at Procter & Gamble, where he held marketing director positions for the Pantene and Bounty brands. Born in Kenya of Indian ethnicity, Amin grew up in the Washington, D.C., area. He holds bachelor’s degree in international policy and master’s degrees in business administration from Duke University.
Anthony Bettencourt
Autonomy ZANTAZ
Anthony Bettencourt, Chief Executive Officer of Autonomy ZANTAZ, has more than 20 years of senior management experience in a variety of high-tech companies and, most recently, as an entrepreneur-in-residence at US Venture Partners. Previously, Anthony was the Chief Executive Officer of Verity, Inc., and in 2005 was awarded the prestigious Ernst & Young Entrepreneur of the Year award for software and technology in the Silicon Valley.
He is a past board member of Alameda County Meals on Wheels and currently serves on the board of directors for blinkx, the world's largest and most advanced video search engine, as well as on the board of directors for National Banana, the most innovative comedy channel on the internet that he founded with Jerry Zucker, and Avolent, the leading application software provider for self-service eBilling. Anthony earned a B.A. in English from Santa Clara University.
Anne Cadwell
Kaiser Permanente Northern California Region
Ms. Cadwell serves on Kaiser Permanente’s senior leadership team for Northern California. She has been active in the healthcare field since 1986, serving as Vice President of Financial Services at Catholic Healthcare West from 1993-2000, and Vice President and Consultant with the management consulting firm Cap Gemini Ernst and Young from 2000-2003. Ms. Cadwell earned a BA in Economics and Math and an MBA from Northwestern University in Illinois.
Stephen Compagni Portis
Renewable and Appropriate Energy Laboratory, UC Berkeley
Mr. Compagni Portis has founded companies in investment banking, enterprise software and aircraft leasing, and financed numerous early stage companies. He is currently Director of Special Projects at the Laboratory and also acts as an advisor to the Mayor of the City of Berkeley in conjunction with the City’s launch of the Berkeley FIRST solar financing initiative. From 1990 through 1999, he served as President of Leveraged Equity Management, an investment banking firm based in San Francisco. From 1995-1998, he was Chairman and CEO of Kettle Restaurants, a 100-unit restaurant chain based in Houston, Texas. He received an M.B.A. from Stanford in 1984, and a B.S. in Operations Research from Cornell University in 1980.
Charles Richard Conradi, Past President
The Clorox Company
Chip is the Treasurer and Vice President of Tax for The Clorox Company where he is responsible for global tax and treasury activities for the company and its affiliates.
Prior to joining Clorox, he was head of international tax at Bank of America in San Francisco and Director of Tax Planning at American President Lines. He received his BA degree from Cornell University; and earned his JD, with honors, as well as his Masters Degree in Taxation, from Golden Gate University. He is a member of the Board of Trustees of Golden Gate University, a commissioner of the Oakland Tax Board of Review, and a member and former Regional Vice President of the Tax Executives Institute.
Matthew Davis
Port of Oakland
Matt is Government Affairs Specialist at the Port where he is responsible for policy analysis, public affairs, and outreach to local, regional, state and federal elected and appointed officials on behalf of the Port’s interests and activities. Previously he was Legislative Assistant to Congressman Richard Gephardt. A native of Santa Rosa, CA and Oakland resident, he earned a BA in Political Science and an MA in Public Policy from UC Berkeley.
Winifred Day
Fine Art by Day
As an art consultant and the founder of Fine Art by Day, Winifred Day has successfully completed over 200 projects for corporate clients since 1986. Her background combines knowledge of fine art, education, and business administration. Ms. Day completed her B.A. in Education from Northeastern University in Boston, and additional studies in Business Administration at New York's Cornell University. Appointed by the Mayor of the City of Oakland, Ms. Day was a Cultural Affairs Commissioner from 1993-1998. As an exhibit representative for the San Francisco Museum of Fine Arts, over the last eight years, Winifred has assisted in educating the greater Bay Area to fine art from around the world. Additionally, she participates as a juror for state and local commission and award competitions and is a Junior Achievement volunteer.
Larry P. Ginsburg, CFP
Ginsburg Financial Advisors
Mr. Ginsburg, a Bay Area native, attended local schools and has offered financial planning and investment management services from his office in Montclair Village in Oakland since 1981. He earned his CFP designation in 1988, and also provides expert witness services in securities litigation proceedings. He has served as Chairman for The Financial Planning Association (FPA) of the East Bay and the FPA Northern California Presidents’ Council.
Philip Lewenthal
Safeway Inc.
Phil is the Director of Tax Planning and Analysis at Safeway, where he has worked since 1985. Previously he worked at Peat Marwick (now KPMG), a CPA firm. Originally from South Carolina, Phil attended the University of South Carolina and Northeastern University in Boston. A resident of Berkeley, he serves on the board of directors of the San Francisco chapter of the Tax Executives Institute.
Mike Moye
Hanson Bridgett LLP
Mr. Moye, a resident of Berkeley, specializes in litigation and counseling related to employment and labor law matters. Mr. Moye has been with Hanson Bridgett for more than 10 years, is a partner in its Labor and Employment Section, and serves as chair of the firm’s Diversity and Associate Mentoring Committees. He earned a BS from the United States Military Academy in 1978 and his law degree from the University of California, Los Angeles School of Law in 1984. Mr. Moye has provided pro bono legal services to the Oakland East Bay Symphony, the STOP AIDS project, Girl Scouts of the San Francisco Bay Area, and AchieveKids.
Michael Pounds
City Team Ministries
Michael joined the board in January 2005 when he was elected Network Chairperson. Michael is a Regional Vice President at CityTeam Ministries and City Director of CityTeam Oakland. Michael is a charter and active Member of American Association of Christian Counselors, active member of the Christian Management Association, and ordained Ministerial elder in the Free Methodist Church Denomination.
Lydia Tinajero-Deck, MD
Children’s Hospital and Research Center Oakland
Lydia is a pediatrician at Children’s Hospital and Research Center Oakland and is an expert on pediatric weight management and healthy nutrition. She is co-director of Children’s HEAL Clinic, which helps children resolve their weight and nutrition issues by helping them improve their eating habits and increase physical activity, and by monitoring their mental health.
Yen Trac
Gap, Inc.
Yen is an attorney at The Gap, Inc. in San Francisco where she handles commercial transactions for the company. Previously, she spent 11 years specializing in tax law in San Francisco at Bank of America, Baker & McKenzie and Morrison & Foerster. Yen received her JD from UC Berkeley Boalt Hall School of Law.
Len Turner
Greater New Beginnings Youth Services
Along with his family, Len Turner opened Greater New Beginnings Youth Services in 1998. The program serves young men, from ages 12-18 and as President, Len works to build an environment where these young men can strive emotionally, socially, and academically. Len earned a BA in Business Management from University of Phoenix.
