Alameda County Community Food Bank Welcomes New Board Members
23 April 2008 -- (Oakland, CA) The Alameda County Community Food Bank is pleased to announce the appointment of two new Board members: Stephen Compagni Portis, Director of Special Projects at the UC Berkeley Renewable and Appropriate Energy Laboratory; and Tarang Amin, Vice President of Clorox Global Franchise at The Clorox Company. “I am delighted to welcome our new Board members,” said Board President Beth Sawi. “They bring with them a deep commitment to the issue of ending hunger, expertise in their fields and enthusiasm for new projects. With their guidance and support, the Food Bank will work to cut energy costs and increase the public’s awareness about the problem of hunger in our community.” Stephen Compagni Portis, a resident of Oakland, has founded companies in investment banking, enterprise software and aircraft leasing, and financed numerous early stage companies. From 1995-1998, he was Chairman and CEO of Kettle Restaurants, a 100-unit restaurant chain based in Houston, Texas. In addition to his work at UC Berkeley, he acts as an advisor to the Mayor of the City of Berkeley in conjunction with the City’s launch of the Berkeley FIRST solar financing initiative. “With the sky-rocketing price of food,” stated Compagni Portis, “I hope to make a difference at the Food Bank by finding new sources of shelf-stable high protein foods and reducing energy costs with the installation of solar panels on the roof.” From 1990 through 1999, Mr. Compagni Portis served as President of Leveraged Equity Management, an investment banking firm based in San Francisco. He received an M.B.A. from Stanford in 1984, and a B.S. in Operations Research from Cornell University in 1980. He currently sits on the boards of Quantal International (risk analytics software), and Creative Growth Art Center (arts education for adults with disabilities). Tarang Amin, a resident of Piedmont, is vice president of Clorox Global Franchise at The Clorox Company where he is responsible for leading the growth and global expansion of the $1.5 Billion Clorox franchise. In addition, he has responsibility for Laundry, Home Care and Away from Home marketing and Health & Wellness growth platform. Born in Kenya of Indian ethnicity, Amin grew up in the Washington, D.C., area. “As a child I have seen the devastating effects of hunger first-hand,” says Amin. “It’s a cause I care about deeply and one that couldn’t be more urgent. We’re living in the shadows of a new hunger that makes food unaffordable for millions of people. I hope to increase awareness of this crisis and let people know how they can help.” Prior to joining Clorox, Amin worked for 12 years at Procter & Gamble, where he held marketing director positions for the Pantene and Bounty brands. He holds bachelor’s degree in international policy and master’s degrees in business administration from Duke University.
