20th Anniversary of “Scouting for Food” Goes Green
Scouts Distributing Paper Door-hangers in Advance of the Annual Food Drive—

13 November 2007 -- (Oakland, CA) Bay Area Boy Scouts are going green this year, distributing paper door-hangers instead of plastic bags in advance of the annual “Scouting for Food”, scheduled for Saturday, November 17. This year’s theme is “Good Turn for America” and Scouts will be distributing door-hangers on Saturday, November 10 to remind residents to leave bags of non-perishable food on their porch for the following Saturday pick-up. The collection effort is the largest one-day food drive of the year for the Alameda County Community Food Bank, which netted 168,275 pounds of food last year. Canned meats and fish, peanut butter, powdered milk, canned stew, dried beans, rice, oatmeal or other healthy cereal, pasta and tomato sauce are the Food Bank’s ten most wanted items.(No glass items, please.)

The door hangers were sponsored by The Clorox Company, and according to Tarang Amin, vice president of global health & wellness at Clorox, “We’re launching a new line of green cleaning products and thinking about sustainability so much that I just cringed at the thought of a plastic bag. Whether it’s simple questions like ‘paper or plastic’ or tougher ones about global resources, what’s wonderful about scouting is the way it teaches kids they have the power to make a difference.”

On Saturday, over 40,000 Bay Area Boy Scouts will be out collecting food. The Coast Guard will team up with Food Bank staff to transport food from the various Boy Scout collection sites (see list below) back to the Food Bank warehouse. Over 200 volunteers will be on hand at the warehouse to sort food on Saturday from 1 – 7:30 pm, and Sunday from 9am – 2:30 pm, so that the items are ready for distribution to community organizations serving clients for the Thanksgiving holiday. Residents who do not receive a door-hanger are invited to drop off their donations at the Alameda County Community Food Bank, 7900 Edgewater Drive, Oakland on November 17.
