Second Annual "Empty Bowls" Event Highlights Hunger Awareness Day, June 5
-Chef Ann Cooper, Renegade Lunch Lady, Is Keynote Speaker-

18 May 2007 -- (Oakland, CA) Nourish yourself with a simple meal of soup and bread and help the Alameda County Community Food Bank fight hunger at their second annual Empty Bowls event on Tuesday, June 5, 5:30 – 7:30 pm at the Food Bank, 7900 Edgewater Drive in Oakland. Held in conjunction with Hunger Awareness Day, the family-friendly event features Chef Ann Cooper, Renegade Lunch Lady, as the keynote speaker. Chef Ann, currently Director of Nutrition Services for the Berkeley Unified School District, is at the forefront of the movement to transform the National School Lunch Program into one that places greater emphasis on the health of students. In addition, Food Bank clients Vivian Hain and her 12-year-old daughter Jasmine, will read from their book, My Life X 4 (published by Poor Magazine) about their experience with homelessness and hunger.

One in three children in Alameda County faces the threat of hunger every day. Guests will be invited to select a hand-painted bowl to take home as a reminder of hunger and the empty bowls in the community. Over 300 colorful bowls were painted by students at Redwood Day School in special "buddy-day" events this April and May. Guests will also be invited to take action by decorating paper plates with words and art which will be sent to Governor Schwarzenegger. A silent auction will feature ceramic pieces from local artists and gift certificates from local businesses. Delicious soup and bread is being donated by the San Francisco Soup Company and Semifreddi's Bakery. Tickets are $20 for an individual, $40 for a family of two adults and two children ($5 for additional child) and may be purchased online or by calling 510-635-3663 ext. 328.

Empty Bowls began in 1990 as a project initiated by a Michigan high school art teacher as a way to raise funds to support a food drive. The following year it was developed as a project to provide support for food banks, soup kitchens and other organizations that fight hunger. Since then Empty Bowls events have been held throughout the world. For more information about Empty Bowls, visit www.emptybowls.net.
