Hunger Action Day Training

Learn basic advocacy tips and what bills are on Capitol Hill that will help eradicate hunger. Members of the Food Bank's Advocacy committee will give you all the tools you need to become a successful advocate. State Hunger Action Day

Sacramento (Buses leave from the Food Bank)

Join the California Hunger Action Coalition for a day of legislative visits, briefing on current state hunger issues, testimony from grassroots groups, rallies and more. Empty Bowls
Tuesday, June 5; 5:30 pm
Tickets: $20 Adults; $10 Youth (Under 18)

Join us for an evening of nourishment as we help fill empty bowls in our community in conjunction with National Hunger Awareness Day. East Bay Crop Walk
Sunday, April 22, 2 pm
Lake Merritt

Walk for hunger and make a difference! Gather your friends, family and sponsors. This scenic 3.2 mile walk around Lake Merritt is to raise awareness of the need for food around the world and raise funds to help stop hunger at home and abroad. Once again, the Food Bank is the local beneficiary of the Crop Walk. Registration begins at 1:30pm at Lake Merritt United Methodist Church located at 1330 Lakeshore Ave., Oakland. Art for Food’s Sake!
Monday, May 21, 5-10 pm

Enjoy an evening of art and appetizers as Downtown Restaurant in Berkeley kicks off an exhibition of original artwork from Bay Area artists who work in restaurants. National Hunger Awareness Day
Tuesday, June 5

Now in its sixth year, this day serves as a platform for domestic hunger-relief organizations to raise awareness about hunger in America. This year’s theme is "The Face of Hunger Will Surprise You." In conjunction with this day, the Alameda County Community Food Bank is hosting Empty Bowls, a fundraising event to benefit those in need in our community. Letter Carriers’ Food Drive
Saturday, May 12

Help stamp out hunger with the National Association of Letter Carriers’ 15th annual food drive. Leave non-perishable food donations near your home or business mailbox for pickup on May 12 when your mail is delivered.

Summer Food Drive
June 18 - August 31

For many children who rely on school lunch programs, summer vacation can mean the end to their only nutritious meal of the day. This summer, the Alameda County Community Food Bank is working hard to promote awareness about the summer lunch sites available throughout the county and providing people with the nutritious food that they need. Your organization can help by hosting a Food Drive to collect nutritious non-perishable food. Food Stamp Enrollment Clinics
FREE

Food Stamp Enrollment Workshops are offered monthly at the Food Bank office. Bilingual Food Bank staff are available to help participants complete the food stamp application and will submit it to the food stamp office for them. VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES

Food Sorting
Weekdays - Sort, screen, box and shelve donated food.
Shifts: Monday-Friday, 8 – 11 am and 11:30 am – 2:30 pm.

Help sort food into boxes that are distributed to the Food Bank’s partner agencies. Your group, whether it be corporate, business, church, youth or other, can make a difference to those in need. Individual volunteers need to attend a 50 minute orientation, held at 1pm each Wednesday. Groups will receive a short orientation when they arrive. Call (510) 635-3663, x 308 to sign up.

Saturday Food Sorting
April 28; May 19; June 2 & 23
Shifts: 9am – Noon and 1 – 4 pm

Volunteers screen, sort, box and shelve donated food products, label cans and repackage donated food. Groups and individuals welcome. Contact the volunteer manager at (510) 635-3663 x 308 to sign up.

General Office Help

General clerical help is an ongoing need for us. May include preparing mailings, phone calls, data entry, filing, and special projects. Our office hours are Monday-Friday, 9 am-5 pm. For more information, call (510) 635-3663 x 308.

Food Helpline Shifts: Monday-Friday, 9 am – Noon and 1 – 4 pm.

The Food Helpline (1-800-870-3663) refers residents in need to food providers. You must be comfortable on the phone and have basic computer skills. Requires minimum 3-month commitment of at least one shift per week. For more information, call (510) 635-3663 x 308.
