Fitzgerald Abbott & Beardsley Celebrates 125th Anniversary
18 March 2008 -- (Oakland, CA) Fitzgerald Abbott & Beardsley LLP (FAB), one of California’s oldest law firms, today announced a gift of $125,000 to the Alameda County Community Food Bank in celebration of the firm’s 125th anniversary this year. The gift is the largest single donation from a professional services firm, and one of the largest received in the Food Bank’s ongoing capital campaign, according to Executive Director Suzan Bateson. “FAB’s gift, doubled to $250,000 by an anonymous match, marks a huge milestone in our capital campaign,” said Bateson. “We are rapidly approaching our campaign goal and are extremely honored that we were selected for this gift.” Today’s announcement kicked off an FAB volunteer work-day at the Food Bank’s facility at 7900 Edgewater Drive in Oakland. FAB attorneys and staff are sorting food and filling boxes that will find their way to hundreds of needy Alameda County residents. Each year, the Food Bank works with over 300 member agencies, such as soup kitchens and food pantries, to help bridge the nutrition-gap for 40,000 children, seniors and adults each week, most of whom are among the working poor. “Rather than spend six-figures on a gala celebration of the firm’s 125th anniversary, we decided to put our money to work in the communities that have been part of our firm’s success for over a century,” said FAB Managing Partner, Barry Epstein. “Our party will take the form of today’s volunteer work, memories of which will stay with our attorneys and staff far longer than a gala celebration.” The Food Bank’s capital campaign committee expects to complete the $5 million campaign goal, which includes costs associated with its Edgewater facility, by the end of June, 2008. “Our new home enables us to provide more nutritious food to children and adults, such as fresh fruits and vegetables,” said Bateson. “Last year we distributed 5.7 million pounds of farm-fresh produce to the community.” Founded in 1883, FAB has grown with the East Bay economy, serving major institutions and scions of industry from the original Caterpillar Tractor Company to the Port of Oakland. The firm has grown at its own pace, eschewing mergers that have dominated the legal field in recent years. The firm currently has 10 practice groups, 32 attorneys and 37 staff. FAB’s practice groups include Business and Corporate Transactions, Estates and Trusts, Franchise, Intellectual Property, Labor/Employment, Land Use/Environment/Natural Resources, Litigation, Nonprofit, Real Estate and Tax.
