Skip Lunch and Fight Hunger on 6-6-06
Alameda County Community Food Bank hosts event at Frank Ogawa Plaza June 6 from 12-3 pm

Oakland, Calif. (6/5/06) East Bay residents are being asked to skip eating lunch on Tuesday, June 6 and donate the money they would have spent to the Alameda County Community Food Bank as part of National Hunger Awareness Day. A donation of $10 can be stretched by the Food Bank to provide 20 meals to low-income children and adults. The Food Bank will be working to raise both money and awareness of hunger at Frank Ogawa Plaza in Oakland from 12 noon-3 pm on June 6.

Every week in Alameda County, 40,000 individuals are served by Alameda County Community Food Bank. Thirty five percent of these clients are children living with families who struggle to make ends meet.

"People don't realize that children are even more susceptible to going hungry during the summer months, as they aren’t in school where they can receive a free or reduced price lunch," points out Suzan Bateson, executive director of the Alameda County Community Food Bank. "Hunger doesn't take a summer break, but there is a great alternative."

In Alameda County, there is a Free Summer Lunch program that the Alameda County Community Food Bank helps coordinate with Oakland Unified School District, the City of Oakland, Senator Perata’s office and AT&T. People can call the Food Bank toll free at 1-800-870-3663 to locate a summer lunch site.
