Holiday Food Drive Nets Over Half Million Pounds for Alameda County Community Food Bank
05 February 2007 -- (Oakland, CA) Large and small businesses, schools, community groups and other organizations will be recognized at the Alameda County Community Food Bank's Holiday Food Drive awards event on Thursday, February 8, 5 -7 pm in acknowledgement for collecting 523,000 pounds of food during the 2006 holiday season. The annual awards event, to be held at the Food Bank, will honor the efforts of more than 640 organizations who participated in the Holiday Food Drive, which runs from September 1 through January 31. Over 300 member agencies, ranging from soup kitchens, shelters, and other community-based organizations, receive donated food at no cost and distribute it to over 40,000 low-income Alameda County residents each week. In addition, the Food Drive raised nearly $85,000 in cash donations. The Synagogue Holiday Dinner Drive brought in a record amount of $45,750 -- top contributors included Temple Sinai, Morrison & Foerster, Congregation Beth-El and Kehilla Community. "We are extremely grateful for the incredible food drive support we receive from the community, which helps us provide emergency food assistance during the holidays and beyond," said Suzan Bateson, executive director of the Food Bank. "Many groups and corporations provide both food donations and cash contributions. The food is a tangible gift and we can leverage every dollar we receive into seven dollars worth of food." The Boy Scout Food Drive contributed 170,000 pounds of food, slightly up over the previous year. Safeway and Albertsons brought in 93,250 pounds, while PolyCom, Inc. came in with 17,390 pounds, followed by Commercial Casework, Inc., Mattson Technology, 3PARData, Inc., Hewlett Packard and Chevron Texaco Credit Union. Awards will also go to Piedmont High School, King Middle School in Hayward and the UC Berkeley Athletics Department. The realty companies of California Prudential Realty of Castro Valley, Windermere Properties of the East Bay and Sampson Realty will also be recognized for their part in the annual realty Can Tree Food Drive. The 2006 Holiday Food Drive was sponsored by ANG Newspapers, CBS5, ABC7, Safeway, Albertson Stores, Chevron, Sybase and AT&T Pioneers.
