(September 23, 2004) – The High Holy Days food drive running from Rosh Hashanah to Yom Kippur culminates in a one-hour food drop on Saturday, September 25 at 8:00 am outside the Paramount Theatre in Oakland, as members of Temple Sinai gather in the spirit of the holiday to donate non-perishable goods to the Alameda County Community Food Bank. “It’s an exciting event, watching 10,000 pounds of canned goods getting loaded onto a semi-truck as over 900 families bring in their contributions,” states Suzan Bateson, executive director of the Alameda County Community Food Bank. “We’re expecting a third of this food drive’s total poundage goal to be collected during Saturday’s one hour food drop.” The High Holy Days period is the central point of reflection for Jews worldwide and culminates in Yom Kippur, regarded as the holiest day in the Jewish calendar. “We observe Yom Kippur with prayer and fasting, and it is this practice that inspires empathy in the Jewish community for those who are at risk of experiencing hunger daily,” states Dan McClosky, who is affiliated with Temple Sinai of Oakland and serves as honorary chairperson for this food drive. “It’s our way of trying to improve the world.” “We encourage people of all faiths to join together in this worthwhile project by bringing non-perishable food down to the Paramount Theatre on Saturday the 25th at 8am to help us feed the hungry children and families in our neighborhood,” Bateson urges.
