Food Bank loads up 2 million pounds of food and moves to new facility
Oakland – On June 3, the Alameda County Community Food Bank will pack up five 53' trailers donated by UPS to transfer 1,250 pallets of potatoes, rice, peanut butter, canned corn, tuna and other food items, along with warehouse and office equipment, to take to the Food Bank's new building at 7900 Edgewater Drive, just off I-880 near the McAfee Coliseum and the Oakland Airport. The Food Bank will be fully operational by June 13. "This move positions the Food Bank at an ideal location, as 50 percent of our partner agencies are within a 10-mile radius of the new site," states Suzan Bateson, the Food Bank's executive director. "Our new 5,500 square foot cooler and freezer system will also provide us with increased capacity to store and distribute more nutritious, but highly perishable food, such as fresh produce and protein-rich items such as fish and meat. This will help us nourish our neighborhoods with nutritious food," Bateson reports. Serpico Landscaping in Hayward, run by Sharon and Richard Hanson, is donating its services to create an edible landscape for the Food Bank. Oakland architect Ed Fernandez worked closely with the Food Bank to develop the office into a highly efficient and attractive space. Three contractors and their staff worked many hours on the new facility as well to bring the project in on time, including Refrigeration Systems, which installed the freezer/cooler; Adacon, which built the dock and front parking area; and Team Construction, which handled the office remodeling. UPS also donated five drivers to help with the move. Advantages of the new site include room for a demonstration kitchen where staff can conduct workshops for agencies on topics including food safety and hands-on food preparation; office space for program expansion and community meeting opportunities; expanded space for volunteers; and access to public transportation for volunteers and staff.
