Contact: Judyth Collin $50,000 Gift from The Sutherland Company Helps Food Bank 22 January 2008 -- (Oakland, CA) The Alameda County Community Food Bank has received a $50,000 pledge of support for its capital campaign from The Sutherland Company, an Oakland-based real estate brokerage firm. The pledge is Sutherland’s first gift to the Food Bank. The public phase of the campaign, dubbed “Mission: Nutrition, Nourishing our Neighborhoods,” was launched last March and had originally been set at $5 million. So far the Food Bank has raised $3.7 million for its new home. Sutherland’s pledge will be matched, dollar-for-dollar, by a challenge grant for donations to the campaign. Other major contributors to the campaign include the Wayne and Gladys Valley Foundation, Oakland-based Kaiser Permanente, the Y & H Soda Foundation, Pleasanton-based Safeway, Inc., the McKesson Foundation, and The Clorox Company of Oakland. “We’re extremely grateful to The Sutherland Company for their generosity,” said executive director Suzan Bateson. “Sutherland’s gift indicates to us that there might be others in the real estate community and in other sectors who can reach into their pockets and help people in need.” The Food Bank works with 300 partner agencies throughout Alameda County to serve 40,000 people each week, which includes 14,000 children and 7,000 seniors. In addition to food distribution, the Food Bank operates a toll-free food helpline, conducts food stamp enrollment workshops and advocates for political change to end hunger. For more information about the campaign or to make a donation, call 510-636-4908 or donate online.
