Last Minute Tax Help Available to Low-Wage Earners in Alameda County
Free food stamp pre-screening also provided at tax sites to further help families in need Oakland, Calif. (April 14, 2005) — The Alameda County Community Food Bank, in partnership with the United Way of the Bay Area, wants families who earned less than $36,000 in 2004 to know that there are free tax preparation sites open on April 15th to help them file their taxes, learn about Earned Income Tax Credits (EITC), and sign up to receive food stamp benefits Low-wage earners who qualify for the EITC can be eligible for $4,300 or more in federal tax credits. People in this tax bracket may also be eligible for food stamps, up to $499 a month for a family of four. Food stamp pre-screening and application help is available at each tax site. "Our food bank strongly believes that combining EITC and Food Stamps will help low-wage earners put more food on the table for their families," states Suzan Bateson, executive director of the Alameda County Community Food Bank. "Our partnership with the Alameda County Community Food Bank has expanded the reach of the "Earn It! Keep It! Save It!" Coalition, whose success is measured by continually increasing the number of eligible tax payers who are introduced to the Earned Income Tax Credit benefit," reports Faith Du Bois, United Way of the Bay Area. "We are extremely pleased with the results of our partnership with the Food Bank to provide additional support to eligible working families in Alameda County."
