2009-2010 Legislative Season offers hope to low-income Californians. This year there are many exciting bills that will help Californians access federal nutrition programs.

AB 719, authored by Assemblywoman Bonnie Lowenthall provides youth transitioning out of foster care with food stamps for the first year of their emancipation regardless of their assets. After one year the youth’s assets and resources would be revaluated according to existing food stamp eligibility. While AB 719 only adds about 1500 people a year to the state food stamp roll, it offers hunger advocates one victory and, at least, a glimmer of hope in an otherwise discouraging legislative year.
