Almost 20 years ago, we hosted our first Savor the Season at Wente Winery in Livermore to raise awareness and bring our community together to create a healthier, more equitable Alameda County. Savor the Season typically takes place on a Sunday afternoon out in the lovely Livermore wine county on the cusp of summer and fall, creating a laid-back garden party vibe.
According to Executive Director of 20 years, Suzan Bateson, “At the first event, we had a really small crowd, as I recall it was under 100 including a lot of staff (maybe all of us who worked at ACCFB then!). I picked up the flowers and did the table arrangements, even, that’s how small the event was.”
Fast forward almost 20 years later, and “Well, of course now it’s a big deal with lots of guests and lots of bidding, much fun, many table hosts, and phenomenal prizes. Our team has secured so many wonderful sponsors, and the guest list has grown to more than 500. It’s a party, indeed.”
From delicious food to fine wine, our team puts together quite the soiree! And, to top it all off, we curate both a silent and live auction with an incredible collection of one-of-a-kind items that are sure to delight! Guests also have the opportunity to learn about hunger ACCFB’s innovative programs and see the impact of their support with the goal of raising awareness and funds to eradicate hunger in our community. We are grateful for this yearly opportunity to be in Community together, celebrating our accomplishments and recommitting ourselves to the work ahead.
The pivot to virtual in 2020
The pandemic forced so much of our lives into the virtual world and Savor the Season 2020 was no exception. We were concerned about how the warmth, heart, and impact of Savor the Season would translate into an online broadcast. But those worries were unfounded because this community came together as never before to support neighbors who have been greatly impacted by COVID-19.
“We all made the most of a difficult time in the pandemic, and it felt like the whole community just wrapped their arms around us… What a validation, and at a time when we needed it most,” says Bateson.
Longtime Savor the Season Host Dave Clark was joined during the broadcast by Franco Finn, Golden State Warrior’s hype man, as the auctioneer. Even our good friends Stephen and Ayesha Curry stopped by to talk about our partnership and offer a $100,000 match from their Eat. Learn. Play Foundation.
Our individual supporters and corporate partners clearly understood that so many people were struggling due the economic fallout from the pandemic and that ACCFB was on the front lines of emergency response. Thankfully, they stepped up in a big way, raising enough funds for 830,000 meals.
Better than ever in 2021
Since we aren’t quite ready to gather in person this year, Savor the Season will be a virtual event again. But don’t worry, there is still a LOT to look forward to.
Our team has knocked it out of the park with some exceptional items for the live auction and, this year, the silent auction is BACK with some fantastic packages from local businesses. Bidding opens September 4th so get ready!
We have a few more surprises up our sleeves, so stay tuned for more. And, in the meantime, RSVP so you are ready join the fun!
