Early Birds Get the Job Done

We always need more volunteers on weekday mornings in the warehouse! We’re often running multiple projects like mixed produce boxes, bulk produce sorting, and much more. Getting our projects done in the morning means food can be processed and sent out to the community quicker. No matter what you prefer working on, we have a job for you.

Baseball, Beats and a Birthday!

Saturday warehouse shifts see lots of groups of families and friends. This month we had a blast with the Oakland Ballers “ballunteers” as well as Nuvision Credit Union, Berkeley JACL, Berkeley Buddhist Temple, Resurrection Oakland Church, San Francisco Bay International Church, and a highlight: five DJ’s with Beats4Hope spinning tunes for us all day. The event was livestreamed on Twitch to raise funds for ACCFB. Volunteer, Claire, got a birthday serenade and everyone boogied. Watch a video of our dance party sort.

Four Decades of Community Volunteering

John Cortesi (left), volunteering at ACCFB in 2010 — 15 years ago!

“It's just such a good feeling to know that for 19 years I've been a small part...that so many people have volunteered their services through the years for 40 years to help somebody else out. Now that's inspiring. For 40 years, people have been coming here wanting to do something for the community.” —John Cortesi, volunteer

Whether you’ve been volunteering for one day, 40 years, or anywhere in between, we’re so happy to have you as part of our volunteer community! March marked our official anniversary date, but we’ll be celebrating our 40th all-year-round. Learn more about the history of ACCFB’s founding in our latest blog post.

April is National Volunteer Appreciation Month, and we can't wait to celebrate YOU. Whether you’re volunteering in the warehouse, in the Community Market, at the Helpline, or in the community, come join us in the Community Engagement Center April 14-18. We’ll have snacks for everyone, T-shirts for the 100-hour+ crew, and swag for volunteers who complete 40 hours or more this year.

Spring into Action

Community members and staff stand outside the Capitol in Sacramento on Hunger Action Day 2024 after a day of lobbying for policies to end food insecurity.

Spring is the busiest time of year for advocacy, and it’s fitting that we have multiple ways for you to get involved!

Right now, Congress is planning to impose devastating cuts on vital nutrition programs, including two that are incredibly important to the ACCFB community: SNAP (known in California as CalFresh), and a federal program that supports the nation’s food banks called The Emergency Food Assistance Program (TEFAP). Click here to contact your members of Congress today and demand that they protect these programs from cuts. Sending a message takes less than 5 minutes. We’ve already written most of the letter for you!

But that’s not all! We don’t want you to miss out on Hunger Action Day 2025 — our biggest advocacy event of the year. This day-long event on April 29 includes a rally at the State Capitol in Sacramento and community advocacy lobbying to advocate for policies that further our goal of ending hunger in Alameda County and beyond. Click here to join the waitlist and reach out to Jessward Docena, Community Organizing Manager, at jdocena@accfb.org if you have any questions.
