Centering Community Choice with Shiloh Mercy House

Ensuring that community members have a say is essential when it comes to distributing food with respect and in dignified ways. At Shiloh Mercy House, a Food Bank partner agency in East Oakland, community feedback has driven decisions about what food they serve, such as including more produce at distributions and providing culturally relevant foods, like hot sauce, that matches community preferences.

Learn more about Shiloh Mercy House and how community feedback informs their decisions in our latest blog post.

What’s New in Policy and Advocacy

Our Policy and Advocacy Team and community advocates have been hard at work, speaking up to elected officials and pushing for anti-hunger policies.

On April 21, a group of ACCFB community members and advocates traveled to Sacramento for California Hunger Action Day. Our message was clear: California needs to fund food first so all of us have the opportunity to thrive!

This month, ACCFB published our first-ever Local Advocacy Priorities agenda! This agenda is a tool for community members and ACCFB in our local advocacy efforts, alongside our state and federal advocacy. By identifying clearly what the community needs and simultaneously strengthening relationships across the different levels of government, we can create and implement legislation that addresses hunger and its root causes.

Prepared Meals for Unhoused Community Members

In November 2025, thanks to collective advocacy efforts, the Alameda County Board of Supervisors approved a Prepared Meals Grant for unhoused residents of Alameda County as part of their $10 million investment in food security from the Measure W Essential Services Fund. As federal funding cuts further threaten food security in the county, this is an essential bolster to community health.

The county partnered with ACCFB to administer the Prepared Meals Grant, through which $1.75 million was distributed to community-based nonprofits to provide prepared meals and connect unhoused community members with CalFresh resources. This is an exciting investment in food security, and we look forward to seeing the continued impact of these funds in the community!
