Meet Robin – Getting Involved and Giving Back

Volunteer & Advocate Robin Marsh in ACCFB's Community Engagement Center sorting sweet potatoes

Robin has been an ACCFB volunteer and hunger advocate since March 2021. She started her journey with ACCFB as a volunteer at our drive-through distribution when she was looking for a way to get involved and give back during the height of the pandemic.

When the pandemic emergency response subsided and ACCFB’s drive-through distribution ended, Robin began looking for other meaningful ways to stay involved.

“As a researcher, I was drawn to this work,” says Robin, who is an instructor at U.C. Berkeley with a deep work history and interest in agriculture, farm workers, and supply chains. “I’m committed to the long-term goal of creating change by working on root causes of hunger.”

So, with her passion and work history, it was a natural fit for her to dive further into our work through community organizing with our advocacy team. Through this work, Robin had the opportunity to meet with and learn directly from East Oakland residents about what’s important to them, and how food access fits into all of it.

This summer, Robin added weekly volunteer shifts in the Community Engagement Center to the ways she’s partnering and giving back.  She loves tapping into all aspects of the Food Bank’s work alongside community members from all walks of life. And she appreciates being able to gather around a complex issue as important as food insecurity in such a welcoming and nurturing space.

“Imagine what we can do together,” says Robin, who sees that every action – big or small – brings us one step closer to a community where no one is hungry.

We hope you, too, can join Robin and our growing ranks of volunteers who’ve become passionate anti-hunger advocates. Visit accfb.org/advocate to learn more.

She learned how everyone can be a leader. Robin appreciated being able to take her volunteer work to a deeper level with advocacy work — learning all the ways she can meet the immediate needs of the Food Bank’s work while building a stronger tomorrow for all of us.
